I have followed the public service careers of multiple prominent lawmakers at local, state, and federal levels over the years, in part from the C-SPAN1 (House) and C-SPAN2 (Senate) coverage viewed daily in my younger days. In addition, I come from a politically active family—a large family with each of my siblings taking a different direction in terms of philosophy or political stances. Being an “army brat” (born into a military family in the days when the Air Force was called “army” (1940s), I was fortunate to be well-traveled as my career military dad got stationed at various Air Force bases over the years, including a stint in France during the early 1950s. Add to these experiences the fact that my family’s idea of “fun” included a weekly no-holds-barred debate on every topic, to include both politics and religion—our “cosmic burp” as I dubbed this mind-stimulating activity. My dad liked Missouri Senator Stu Symington (D-MO), who had been Secretary of the Air Force from 1947 to 1950 before becoming Senator for our home state (our coming-back-to place for all military related travels). When Pop encountered injustice in the military, it was Stu Symington who intervened, and this was my first [childhood] experience with asking elected representatives for help, so I began paying closer attention. The busing debate in the early 1970s is when I first remember hearing Pop mention the name “Senator Joe Biden” (and others). My mom and dad were in favor of integration of public schools but were against having state and federal governments order busing outside of neighborhoods chosen by the parents who’d looked at the schools in a given community as part of the reason(s) why they’d bought a house. There was some bigotry involved in Missouri’s protests of busing in some cases, but not my parents. It is in this context that I remember discussions of the pros and cons that involved Joe Biden’s Senate objections—he was not taking a prejudiced stand but was instead backing what my own parents were saying… that neighborhood schools were closer to home and the time spent [wasted, my parents thought] on a bus being taken so far away from the children’s own neighborhoods took away from the learning experience. I didn’t know much about the workings of Congress (especially the slow-moving Senate) at the time. However, based upon what my parents said, it seemed that their opinions of the Democratic Senators (like Joe Biden and others) who were moderately opposed to having the federal government interfere in family decisions seemed reasonable at the time. On this and other issues, the one thing I noticed about Senator Biden is that he is not afraid to admit when he has been wrong. “I’m evolving on that issue” is something he has been known to say over the years. He’s flexible when flexibility is needed, and can stand strong on principle when such strength is required to get things done. “Slow but steady” is how I’d characterize President Biden’s approach to governance. He studies problems, talks to all sides, and tries to form solutions or decisions based upon a broad knowledge base. Particular strengths: Empathy and compassion for others, coupled with an ability to take strong action at appropriate times and then stand firm in the face of bullying. Not flashy as a leader, but not wimpy either. A decent family man who puts love of country over any political party..
