Like other trick or treaters, we would look over our collections and make trades. I gave my mom anything that had peanuts in them (I didn’t like chocolate with peanuts, she loved it)
Then the cousins and I would have video game tournaments in the basement until it was time to go home.
Writing this, it feels so bittersweet. I miss those precious nights with my family.
Somewhere in my mid-teens, fewer relatives started coming. Then there were times to cancel due to emergencies or health reasons. Once I was in college, it stopped happening. Most of the kids were now adults or teenagers.
I do keep tabs through Facebook and chats with some of the relatives. One of my cousins said that Halloween has gotten a bit sad since those days. With most of the neighborhood kids grown & gone, very few trick or treaters are around. The adults who’d go all out on scary decor and host bonfire parties are now elders who quietly leave bowls of candy on the porch before going to sleep.
Maybe someday my brother, cousins and I can revive the tradition with the next generation.
