He is looking to secure his southern flank and ensure year round navigation through the Azov and Black Seas. He is also looking for more favorable terms for the transit fees of the gas pipelines running trough Ukraine that Joe pays tolls on. Finally he is seeking buffer room to calm that shrieking inner psyche wound that all Russians have — the fear of invasion from the West. Napoleon and Hitler and others have cost Russia millions of lives. They see the expansion of NATO in a different light than those of the West. Russians also have a bit of nostalgia for the power and prestige of the USSR on the world stage. This is especially so in the political class to at emerged out of the collapse in the 1990s.
