Let me see if I can remember the New Edition Member’s Shirt in addition I really love this various jobs I”ve had: Started babysitting at 11 years. Got a job at an ancient print shop way before computers where we used things like velox proofs and Kluge printing presses. Worked in a tiny neighborhood grocery store. Pizza place. Secretary to the principal at one of the schools at a facility for emotionally disturbed children. Whoa! Got hired to purchase product and get the store going for some people who invested in gold and sold gold jewelry, priced by the gram or oz, I can’t remember. Snazzy joint. Didn’t know jack about gold, acted my way into the job. Daycare. Several times. Delivered flowers and plants and set up for weddings, etc for a floral shop. Zookeeper at a zoo that contained animals indigenous to Texas. Best job I ever had. Maintenance for a cemetery, which include carrying weedeaters for hours, picking up millions of silk flower petals, digging graves, attending funerals, closing graves, which included back filling by hand. Hard work. Delivered mail for USPS as a substitute carrier for two rural route carriers. It was a good job. Did intake for the Attorney General of Texas, Child Support Division. Worst job I’ve ever had. Oh yes, I worked in a nursing home as a CNA, heartbreaking. I was a contract employee for the Dept of Human Service as it was known back then and made home visits to applicants wanting SNAP benefits, Medicaid, TANF, this job took me to places I never dreamed existed. In between, I did odd jobs, like I painted the interior of a Denny’s restaurant and helped people pack to move, oh and I worked as a phone reservation agent for LaQuinta Hotels, and also for a company that developed and sold websites.

There are more than I listed. I did what I had to, to support my kids and myself. As I typed that list of jobs I’ve had, I thought back to what ended each one. Usually it was because I had some kind of emotional breakdown. Then I would get it together a little bit and decide to try again, go out, get a job, blah, blah, blah. My life was tumultuous for so many years. Who knew I had bipolar? Everybody just thought of me as a drama queen. That’s how it went for me. I never did stay on with an employer long enough to accrue any kind of real benefits, much less retirement benefits. There was certainly no planning. I basically managed to keep my head above water, and it felt like success simply not to be drowning. My case worker at the New Edition Member’s Shirt in addition I really love this mental health clinic I went to for years asked me if I wanted to apply for disability on numerous occasions. I always declined, because I was determined to get better and be able to get and keep a decent job. There is no retirement for me. It’s disability. And I fell into it. It took me a long time to accept; there is a stigma attached. It’s not how I envisioned my 50’s on up. I recently ran out of one of my bipolar medications. I was out for five days. Those were the worst five days I can remember in years; my mental state was not good and my emotions were all over the place. It was terrifying. It went away the second day I was back on my meds. I wondered then, is this how I used to feel and act and be all the time? Before my diagnosis and then finding the right medicine? Ugh. It was. So only recently have I accepted my disability for what it is. And I have stopped taking the system for granted and become eternally grateful for the benefits I receive today.
