Pro-Russian activists got into legal trouble; Russian sources claim some were murdered. The use of the Russian language greatly decreased in public life, and people all over Ukraine became more confident in their Ukrainian identity. Millions of Ukrainians crossed into the EU looking for better job opportunities, especially in Poland. Yet, as mentioned, the country remained an oligarchy. In 2019, new president Volodymyr Zelenskyi was elected with a 73% majority. The election map did not reflect the divides mentioned earlier at all:

Hence, Russia began amassing its troops near the Ukrainian border over the years, trying to force a diplomatic solution like a treaty guaranteeing the neutrality of Ukraine. For reasons as of yet unknown, both the West and Russia refused to make any concessions on their national interests. History will have to show which side is most at fault here.
