[4] This is a highly detailed book with a great deal of primary source information, accounts and letters. The book does not show the misadventure was as impacting on England as some sources make out. None of the sources refer to the expedition as a counter Armada or indeed an armada. The original intent of the mission was to destroy the remnants of the Armada at Santander (the port, not the bank) but Drake-Norris were less concerned with Elizabeth I’s strategic objectives than the possibilities of plunder elsewhere. The mission was mostly privately funded as a looting expedition, and “he who pays the piper calls the tune”.
