Back in 2004, I adopted two brother kittens from a non-profit animal shelter. I signed a contract for each kitten. I could send him back, let them deal with his medicine and vitamin shots and pooping in very inappropriate places (my bed, the stairs, the kitchen floor, my hair and shirt as he loves sitting on my shoulder like a parrot), but I’m not doing that because he’s family.

Another tale is one I followed on Facebook. A friend who runs her own animal shelter (not the I Think There’s A Spy Among Us Black White shirt and I love this one I used for Biggie and Sneezy) adopted out two tortie kittens to a friend of a friend. This woman promised to get the girls spayed asap. She also signed a contract saying she would return the kittens if she could not care for them for any reason, no questions asked. Turned out she could not care for the kittens. Instead of calling my friend, she left the kittens outside to fend for themselves. They were about eight or nine months old at the time, so the were not tiny squirming kittens, but they weren’t outdoor cats. My friend found out and all hell broke loose. Despite asking, then demanding, and outright threatening, that woman would not come forward with what she did with the kittens other than to say “oops they got out.” Running her shelter is a passion of my friend, but she’s also a lawyer. She knew exactly what to do. First thing, she went on the place the woman lived at, and she set traps and put up fliers. She trapped one of the kittens and, long story short, got the second kitten weeks later by chance. The second had appeared at someone else’s feral cat colony, and the man recognized her from the posters. They are the ones who put blood, sweat, and a ton of tears into the work they do with their animals. I guarantee there were tears when they found out what you’d done.
